What is Whisky Centurion?
I first fell in love with whisky at the Aberlour distillery on a visit to the highlands many years ago. Coming home with a bottle of the, now discontinued, 10 year old whisky I was very happy. As I finished the bottle I always made sure to have a replacement in the cupboard and I was very happy with the choice.
However, as time went by I realised that I was experiencing a very (very!) narrow window of whisky.
The goal of becoming a whisky centurion was to taste, experience and compare 100 different whiskies to give myself a broader understanding of what I liked (and didn’t like) and hopefully to give me wider experience of the huge array of whiskies available out there.
This is a journey of discovery through the world of whisky with a focus on affordable, everyday and accessible whiskies. Maybe that will change overtime - we’ll see!
A little about me
I’m Chris and, despite being an Englishman living near London, I was born in Aberdeen and spent many of my formative, teenage years in Elgin on the north coast of Scotland. During this time I gained an enormous appreciation for Scotland and the people living there. The fresh air, the beautiful coast, the mountains and the forests. A small part of me has always felt Scottish.
Visits from friends or family inevitably meant a visit to a local distillery and, though I was too young to drink, they always felt like magical places. It wasn’t until I returned many years later that I truly began to appreciate Scottish whisky.
Many years later, I was on a road trip through Scotland taking in all the tourist sites: Glencoe, Ben Nevis, Loch Ness... and of course we made sure to visit a distillery or two. First we stopped at Benromach in Forres before visiting Aberlour on our way into the highlands. The beautiful Aberlour distillery just grabbed my heart, a beautiful old distillery with smooth, delicious and easy-drinking whisky to match. I brought a bottle back with me and have had at least one in my cupboard ever since.
